In 2019, the City of El Cerrito was notified by the California State Auditor that it was being assessed under its Local High Risk Program. In February 2020, the Joint Legislative Audit Committee approved an audit of the City by the State Auditor. This audit took place from October 2020 to March 2021, which was conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. City staff cooperated fully and complied with all requests of the team from the State Auditor's office during the audit period. The City was provided with a draft of the audit report in early March and, per regulations, was given five days to respond to the audit. The City responded in the appropriate timeframe and the full report was released on March 16, 2021.
Following the issuance of the report, the City is required to prepare a Corrective Action Plan that addresses the high risk areas identified in the report. The City will then provide progress reports to the State Auditor every six months regarding implementation of the Corrective Action Plan. The State Auditor will remove the high risk designation once they are satisfied that the City has taken satisfactory corrective action.
