Play Like a Girl+

Building on CA AB 2404: Equality for Girls in Sports

The City of El Cerrito Recreation Department hosted its first annual Play Like a Girl+ event on Sunday, September 24th, 2023 from 9am-1pm. The event aimed to build upon AB 2404, which was signed into California law to expand opportunities for girls to play sports in community parks and recreation. The goal of Play Like a Girl+ is to introduce girls+ in grades 2-6 to a variety of sports in a fun-filled setting as well as provide encouragement and resources for long-term involvement in athletics.

The event took place at the El Cerrito Community Center and Cerrito Vista Park, and was free to participants (though advance registration was required). After a welcome and inspirational message from the City Manager and Mayor, participants got to experience two athletic sessions, visit booths of local sports clubs and teams, and watch a performance by the El Cerrito Recreation Advanced Gymnastics class.

Play Like a Girl+ would not be possible without the support from community leagues, organizations, coaches, and businesses! See below for everyone who made the 2023 event a success.

We look forward to making this an annual event, and hope to see even more girls+ in 2024!

*To ensure that our community is inclusive and equitable, we are intentionally using a ‘+’ in Girl+ to include cis, trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, gender queer and any female-identified individuals.
