About the Unit
The ECPD's Detective Unit conducts the on-scene investigations of major incidents; investigates crimes that require an extended time commitment, expertise, or sensitivity; and conducts follow-ups to crimes initiated through patrol reports.
Serious crimes may require a more lengthy investigation than uniformed patrol officers can provide. The duty of the Detective Unit is to solve crimes and thoroughly prepare cases for prosecution as well as maintain liaisons with other investigative agencies including the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
The Detective Unit is responsible for coordination and follow-up of major crimes, such as homicide, robbery, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, fraud, and burglary. Our detectives also track sex, narcotics, and arson registrants.
The Detective Unit consists of four detectives, one corporal, and one sergeant.
All are trained through the
Institute Of Criminal Investigations in the specialty discipline relative to their assignments. The division also works with the City of El Cerrito
Crime Prevention Committee to offer crime prevention materials and presentations to the community. Detectives are available to speak to groups or individual businesses about crime trends and prevention methods.
