Environmental Services and Public Works staff is embarking on a demonstration project to see if LED streetlight technology will meet the City’s goals on San Pablo Avenue, while saving money and energy. This week we installed new LED streetlight heads along one block of San Pablo Avenue, between Manila and Schmidt, in front of City Hall and are inviting the public to provide feedback.

The 80w LED streetlights will consume approximately 50% less energy and represent a 50% reduction in C02 emissions compared to the current 150w+ High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) streetlights. Depending upon how PG&E structures its rates for these new energy efficient lights, they also have the potential to save approximately 50% in energy costs. (A new LED streetlight rate structure is anticipated from PG&E in March.) The lights have many other environmental and cost advantages as well, including: 100% Dark-Sky Compliance, No Mercury/Lead, and 4x the lamp life compared to the current HPS lights (100,000 hours compared to 25,000 hours), therefore significantly reduced maintenance costs and waste.
