The Arts and Culture Commission (ACC) consists of seven members who demonstrate a commitment to various arts disciplines, including but not limited to: fine arts, visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, art history, and arts education.
The mission of the ACC is to advise the City Council of the needs of the artistic and cultural community; encourage and promote programs and events that engage the art community and local businesses with the intent of building a flourishing and vibrant art and cultural network; provide advice to existing artistic and cultural organizations by sponsoring forums, programs, and events; and upon request, advise the City with respect to possible sources of funding, all with the purpose of making El Cerrito an exciting and successful arts and cultural community.
The ACC is charged with oversight of the Arts in Public Places Program, which requires certain development projects to contribute 1% of construction costs to public art, and is responsible for acquisition, funding, and placement of public art in the City on public property. The ACC is also juries the City Hall Gallery Space, located on the second floor of City Hall at 10890 San Pablo Avenue.
City Hall Gallery Current Show:
Japanese Heritage Photo Exhibit
The El Cerrito Historical Society is sponsoring an exhibit of historic photos depicting Japanese flower growers in the City Hall Gallery Space. Tom Panas of the Historical Society has developed this exhibit to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of the Japanese nursery community to our local history. The exhibit will be on display through September, 2010.
Call to Artists--City Hall Gallery Space
The City of El Cerrito’s Arts and Culture Commission (ACC) invites artists to submit proposals to display their work in the rotating Gallery Space in the El Cerrito City Hall.
The Gallery Space, in the loft hallway above the lobby of the new City Hall, fulfills the City’s contribution to the Art in Public Places program, which requires certain developments to contribute 1% of construction costs to public art. The Gallery Space has had successful showings since its opening in October 2008, featuring local artists Charlotte Britton, Pam Fingado, Jana Bouc, Lin Salamo, Ed Kinney, Dug Waggoner, Joan Keyes, Sandi Potter, Lois Cantor, Kristin Satzman, Tomye', and Helena Tiainen.
The ACC reviews submissions for the Gallery Space twice each year, in May and November. Submissions are due at the close of business on the last working day of the first week of May and November of each year. From time to time, the ACC may announce themes for upcoming shows. Preference is given to artists who are residents of El Cerrito.
Artists are invited to submit proposals at any time. While submissions will be considered for any themed exhibitions, the ACC will also consider proposals of different themes or variations on any themes for current or future exhibitions. The ACC will consider applications from individual artists or artists applying as a group, and may choose several artists and works of art to be displayed in one exhibition. During the exhibit period, artists may schedule and host a reception at City Hall, and the City will promote the artist and works of art in various City publications and on the City’s website.
The Gallery Space is a north-facing wall on the second floor loft hallway in City Hall, overlooking the lobby, with plenty of natural light. The exhibit space measures 42.75 feet (513") in length and 7.33 feet (88") in height, with a rail-wire hanging system.
Interested artists should provide an electronic sample of their works of art to be presented to the Arts and Culture Commission for review and consideration. Guidelines for submission can be downloaded below. Preference will be given to artists who are residents of El Cerrito. Proposals and examples should be submitted to Karen Pinkos, Assistant City Manager/ACC Staff Liaison, 10890 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito, CA 94530; kpinkos@ci.el-cerrito.ca.us; (510) 215-4302.
