Online Renewal for 2014-15 Annual Licenses Now Available!
Make sure you have your business number and classification available, then proceed to BUSINESS LICENSE RENEWAL.

The City of El Cerrito requires anyone who engaged in business within city limits (including operation of rental property) to obtain a business license and pay a license tax.
The Business License Tax Ordinance defines the business license requirements, process, and tax rates.

New Business Licenses
You can complete a Business License Application and then mail to the City with the required payment. Contact the Finance Department at 510-215-4335 for assistance with completing your business license application and determining the amount of taxes and fees due.

Renewal of Business Licenses
Annual business licenses expire on June 30 each year. Renewal notices are mailed in June and the required payment of taxes and fees is due July 1. Payments received after July 31 are subject to penalties. For information on the annual business license renewal process, see the 2014-15 Business License Renewal Frequently Asked Questions.

Tax Rates and Fees
Tax rates for FY 2014-15 apply beginning July 1, 2014.  New business licenses and renewals are also subject to administrative processing fees and the State-mandated SB 1186 fee, which is used to develop disability access resources.

Business license tax rates are updated each spring for the upcoming fiscal year.

License Periods
Most business licenses are effective for the City's fiscal year, July 1 to June 30. Semi-annual, quarterly, and daily licenses are available for some business categories.

Businesses with quarterly and semi-annual licenses do not receive renewal notices. Contact the Finance Department at 510-215-4335 for more information on renewing these types of business licenses.

Other Business-Related Permits

To operate your business legally in El Cerrito, you may need other types of licenses or permits issued by the City, or a County, State or Federal agency.  Before obtaining a business license, check with the Community Development Department to complete the Zoning Information Form and to obtain any necessary Home Occupation Permit, Conditional Use Permit, or building permits. Taxicabs, massage therapists, and bingo operators need to obtain specific permits from the Police Department to operate in El Cerrito.
