El Cerrito STARS Internship Program
The City of El Cerrito STARS Internship Program offers El Cerrito High School students in the IT and Media Academies learning opportunities in a variety of fields, while enriching public service for the City. Whether students are determining a career path to take or fulfilling an academic requirement, employment as an intern is a great way to get started.

EC STARS is a paid internship program offered by the City of El Cerrito in partnership with the WCCUSD. The 9 week program runs from mid-June to August 12, 2016. Interns will be paid $11.60 hour and should expect to work approximately 12-15 hours per week, depending on the needs of the department. Interns are required to attend weekly classes (Fridays,10am-12p) and complete all homework assignments in order to receive five (5) academic credits. The program culminates with a presentation at a City Council Meeting.

What is an Intern?
An intern is a student who is undergoing supervised practical training. An intern may work as an apprentice or trainee in an occupation or profession to gain practical experience.

Who is eligible?
The Intern program is currently offered to El Cerrito High School students between their Junior and Senior year who are at least sixteen (16) years of age and a current member of either the Information Technology or Media Academies.

2016 Internship Opportunities
In 2016, EC STARS may be placed in internships with the following City Departments/Divisions and perform the following key tasks (in addition to general office duties and providing customer service)

City Manager's Office: Intern will update web pages on City's website & help to develop plan to enhance web presence. Intern will learn office skills including filing, preparing mass mailings, etc. as well as help with outreach/marketing projects. Intern must have experience using Word & Excel. Experience/interest in taking photographs a plus.

Finance: Intern will assist with the business license renewal process including data entry, payment reconciliation, mailing and customer service.  Intern must have experience using Word & Excel.

Human Resources: Intern will help to compile documents into an electronic package for new employees; create forms; provide customer service to the public; file and manage records for the Human Resources Division. Intern must have experience using Word & Excel.

Public Works - Engineering: Intern will assist with taking and recording measurements in the field, help to collate materials, scanning and filing records, attend technical meetings, and other related duties. The Engineering Intern will learn Public Works and Engineering terminology, customer service and administrative skills.  Intern must have experience using Word & Excel.
 
Recreation: Intern will help to enhance department's visibility and increase number of participants in programs, classes and events; Assist with monthly e-newsletter and special projects/events; Develop printed marketing including graphic design work such as editing images and creating flyers and posters. Intern must have good customer service skills and experience using Word, Excel, Publisher, Adobe Photoshop and Google Docs. Experience/interest in graphic design a plus.

Recycling: Intern will learn customer service and administrative skills, as well as a lot about recycling and other environmental issues, by helping out at the front counter at the El Cerrito Recycling and Environmental Resource Center. Intern will input energy and water use data from energy and water bills into a database. Intern must have good customer service skills and experience using Word & Excel.

ITA, in A231A by noon on Wednesday,  May 11, 2016.

The application packet should include:
1. Completed City of El Cerrito job application form
2. A personal statement (500 words or fewer) describing your interest in working for the City and what you hope to gain from the program
3. One letter of recommendation from an advisor, counselor or your IT or Media Academy teacher or coordinator
4. “Parent Permission Form for Study Trip” (pick up form from Chris in ITA)
5. Cover Letter and Resume  (recommended)

The application package must be turned in to Chris Merrida, ITA, who will submit the
applications to the City of El Cerrito.
