Bicycling and Walking in El Cerrito

In recent years, the City has developed several new bicycling facilities and is continuously working to create safe and accessible pedestrian facilities. In June 2007, the City adopted a Circulation Plan for Bicyclists and Pedestrians.

The City is also in the process of developing and completing an Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan. The inventory portion was recently completed.

Finally, the upcoming San Pablo Avenue Streetscape project aims to improve the pedestrian, bicycle and transit access along the Avenue. The streetscape project will include ADA-compliant improvements along the length of the Avenue, including improved crosswalks at most intersections, new medians from Carlson to Central; bulbouts, pedestrian refuge islands and pedestrian countdown signals to make crossing the busy Avenue easier; and improved amenities, including street furnishings and street trees along the length of the Avenue.

Whether you want to start biking to work or just need company on weekend rides, 511's Bike Buddy Ridematch service will help you find other local bicyclists. New bikers will be "buddied up" with experienced bicyclists to gather tips, route information and moral support, while experienced bicyclists can find others to ride with or novice bicyclists to assist.

Ohlone Greenway:

The Ohlone Greenway is a multi-use path (referred to by many locals as the "BART Path".) It runs under the BART tracks from the City's northern to southern border parallel to San Pablo Avenue. It provides recreation and exercise opportunities for residents of all ages. It also provides non-motorized transportation access to the El Cerrito Del Norte and El Cerrito Plaza BART stations, the El Cerrito Library and Senior Center as well as a connection to a similar path to the south (connecting to Albany and Berkeley.)

A connection to the future Central Richmond Greenway is in the planning stage.

Electronic bike lockers

El Cerrito is home to several installations of electronic bike lockers. We have lockers available on an "as needed" basis along the Ohlone Greenway at the El Cerrito Plaza BART station, City Hall and the Community Center.
