The City expects to begin construction of the Ohlone Greenway Natural Area and Rain Garden project in May 2014. This project, designed by the planning and landscape architecture firm Place Works, will upgrade the segment of the Ohlone Greenway between Fairmount Avenue and south of the city limit. Construction is estimated to be completed this summer. The project is one way the City is implementing the
Ohlone Greenway Master Plan (adopted June 2009).
In 2010, the City received a $903,721 Proposition 84 grant to upgrade approximately
2.5-acres of the Ohlone Greenway between Brighton (in Albany) and Fairmount (in El Cerrito). The project will create a rain garden to treat existing stormwater runoff and an informal play/exploration and gathering area; utilize low-maintenance, low water using native plants; remove non-native vegetation and improve riparian habitat; and improve safety and pedestrian-access to the El Cerrito Plaza.
